Why do you not sketch in color?

I have various color pencils, including Derwents, Faber-Castells, and Prismas - you name it, I have it all. However, what I don't have is a comfortable grasp of the entire color spectrum. As a result, I prefer to stick with what I know best: graphite pencils. I've been sketching with graphite for the past 10 years, and it's a medium I'm very comfortable with.

By concentrating on a single medium, I've been able to develop a deeper understanding of its unique characteristics, capabilities, and limitations.

  • Pentel Ain Stein 4B gives me the darkest tone for hairs.
  • Faber Castells 2B gives perfect darkness for shadows.
  • Camlin's HB for darker midtones.
  • Camlin's H for lighter midtone values.
  • Camlin's 2H gives the perfect light tonal range.

These 5 pencil leads has allowed me to utilize the full range of tonal values and textures that graphite offers.

Working with a single medium has also streamlined my creative process. I've developed a familiar routine, knowing exactly how to achieve the desired effects. This consistency has helped me to produce high-quality work and delivering results I can be proud of.

While exploring different mediums can be exciting, I've found that specializing in graphite has brought me a sense of mastery, efficiency, and authenticity. By focusing on a single medium, I've been able to refine my skills, develop a consistent style, and produce high-quality work that truly represents my artistic vision.
